IBM Service Management: Aligning IT with Your Company's Business Objectives

Session Abstract:

As customers evolve their data centers to virtualized environments to reduce costs and gain efficiencies, the need for effective management of the IT environment becomes critical. John Kogel will discuss IBM's Service Management capabilities and how they help organizations better manage their virtualized IT infrastructure to more effectively and efficiently deliver IT services. John will also discuss the impact virtualization is having on the evolution of the data center, the customer benefits of this evolution, and how leveraging an integrated Service Management approach to simplify administration and automate management of resources is key to success. A demo will show how integrated management of a virtualized environment can reduce power costs and reduce the need for additional hardware. In addition, the benefits of cloud computing and the management of the underlying virtualized environment will be covered.

Prior to this role, John was Director of IBM's ABSM Development. In this role, John was responsible for managing the development of SOA, Business Services Management, IT Service Management, Monitoring Best Practices, and Business Partner enablement.
He and his team were responsible for developing and supporting existing and new products in Tivoli's Availability and Business Services Management space, heading the integration with other pillars across the IBM software group as well as Global Services and Systems Technology Group. John led the IBM Tivoli Monitoring V6.1 development effort. He directed the Services Oriented Architecture development and Business Services Management solutions. Both areas are emerging opportunities in a growing market. John led the Business Partner enablement group. This group was put in place to drive new monitoring solutions into new channels. John took on the integration of two recent acquisitions, Collation and a component of MUSE.
Prior to his work at IBM, John served as Vice President of Research and Development at Candle Corporation from 1986 to 2004. With Candle's acquisition, John joined the IBM team to lead the integration of Candle products into the IBM portfolio. The portfolio included zOS solutions such as OMEGAMON and Distributed based solutions like ITM and ITCAM. At Candle, John focused on all the monitoring solutions, as well as application integration solutions including CL/Supersession and Roma, an early SOA platform for application integration.
